studies have shown that individuals with psychiatric disorders, such as
bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression and other psychiatric
illnesses are deficient in glutathione.
Glutathione is the major antioxidant and free radical scavenger in the brain and plays a vital role in mopping up harmful toxins. In a study published in the July 2010 issue of the International Journal of Neuropsyhopharmacology researchers found that the levels of systemic glutathione were significantly decreased in all psychiatric conditions and that individuals with these types of mental disorders may be more susceptible to oxidative stress and free radical damage.

How to Increase Glutathione Production
Dr. Michael Berk of The Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria published a study of brain glutathione and its effectiveness on bipolar sufferers. Dr. Berk states, “Brain
glutathione metabolism appears to be a valuable new treatment target
for psychiatric disorders, and we hope the impressive results of this
study open up a new treatment option.”
Ashley Bush, M.D., Ph.D., the article’s corresponding author, further explains: “Glutathione is the brain’s primary antioxidant defense, and there is evidence of increased oxidative stress in bipolar disorder.”
In practice however it can be difficult to raise glutathione levels through oral supplementation, as glutathione (GSH) is a fragile molecule that is quickly destroyed in the digestive tract.
